Welcome to Germantown-located in eastern Shelby
County. Germantown is equally convenient to the airport and downtown
Memphis. It is approximately 17 miles from the Germantown City
Hall to downtown Memphis.
Not your typical suburb, Germantown strives to
have the best of everything: schools, shopping, community events,
restaurants, housing, and one of the lowest crime rates in the
state. Add beautiful landscaping, friendly neighborhood, a performing
arts facility that rivals any in the country, and you've got a
place people are attached to.
The City of Memphis has contained the majority
of the population of Shelby County, but this has been steadily
decreasing since 1970 as the result of outward migration of Memphians
that continues today. Germantown's population explosion began
in the 1970's. The 1970 U.S. Census listed the population at 3,474.
By the time the 1980 Census had been completed, Germantown's population
had grown to 20,459, an increase of 48.90%. In the last certified
special census completed in 2002, the population had reached 40,203.
Germantown has a very temperate climate. Winters
are brief and mild, with the coldest days during January and February.
Spring is a beautiful time of the year when the dogwoods and azaleas
bloom. Summers are green and warm, often with afternoon showers.
The cool, crisp fall air makes autumn a lovely time to see the
colorful leaves on the majestic trees in Germantown.
